Ammonia solution, also known as ammonia water, ammonia liquors, aqua ammonia, aqueous ammonia, is a solution of ammonia in water. Denoted by symbols NH3(aq), it is sometimes considered an ammonium hydroxide solution. In spite of the fact that the name ammonium hydroxide implies an alkali with [NH4+][OH-] composition, it is really not possible to isolate samples of NH4OH. The NH4+ and OH- ions are not a significant fraction of the total ammonia except in extremely dilute solutions. Aqueous Ammonia (Liquor Ammonia) Ammonia in Water, also called Aqua Ammonia is safe to handle and enables avoiding hazards possible with the use of Ammonia Gas by reducing its vapour pressure.
Also called Ammoniacal Liquor, this inorganic chemical is used as a liquid chemical in rubber, pharmaceuticals and other industries. It is sometimes referred as Ammonium Hydroxide with NH4OH as chemical formula, 2672 as Un No. and 1336-21-6 as CAS registry. Ammonia solution is manufactured with a concentration of about 25% w/w and supplied in packaging, such as:
- 5 Lt. To 235 Lt. HMHDPE Plastic containers
- 10 MT to 20 MT Tankers
- 22 MT ISO Tankers
AMMONIA SOLUTION: Ammonia gas releases pungent odor on disturbance, and causes irritation to eye, skin, respiratory tract and mucous membranes.
Nature of Hazards: The pressure rises upon heating and cause severe risk of bursting. Eyes, skin and respiratory tract are irritated by mist and vapor. The body parts severely burn upon extended contact with the liquid. The liquid spilled evaporates immediately and spreads in atmosphere.
Protective Devices: One must wear mask, googles, PVC/ rubber gloves, hood, boots and suit to protect the body. One must always have Eye-wash bottle containing clean water.
Emergency Action: Move vehicle to open ground, stop the engine, followed by warning road users. It is important that people must stay away from dangerous area. People must not face the wind coming from the leakage or spillage direction. They must wear protective devices.
Spillage: Warn people if the vapors drift towards their area. Try to use sand or earth for containing leaking liquid. If this doesn’t work, make use of water spray to knock down the vapour.
Fire: Spray water to cool down the containers, if exposed to fire.
First Aid: Remove contaminated clothes and wash all areas affected with water. Wash eyes with water for 15 minutes in case the Ammonia vapours get in to eyes. One must seek medical treatment upon experiencing symptoms due to inhalation or contact of ammonia gas with eyes or skin. The one who has inhaled the gas must lie down and keep still. The sufferer must be kept warm. If the patient is breathing normally, it is not essential to apply artificial respiration.
Additional Information: Ammonia Drums/Jerrycans must be handled carefully. These containers must not be exposed to heat, as it can cause high vapor pressure. These containers must be loaded above the height of truck body and no part of containers must project outside the truck body.
Steel containers must be used for storing Liquefied Ammonia. It is provided in capacities, like:

- 400 kg Tonners
- 6 to 15 MT Tankers
- ISO Tanks
All packaging containers can withstand higher pressures, and these can comply with essential statutory requirements of the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization and the International Maritime Organization as applicable.
Ammonia can be fire hazard in closed area, especially in the presence of oil and combustible material. It is generally safer in an open and well-ventilated area. It is corrosive to material like gold, silver, brass, bronze, galvanized surfaces, aluminum alloys and copper.
